We started trying for our baby right after our wedding. My husband and I are both extremely type A and wanted to do absolutely everything by the book which meant temping, eating lots of veggies, quitting cigars for him and above all quitting drinking.

Now not to say we were big drinkers in the past. My husband and I are the occasional glass of wine on a weeknight people. Basically we know if we open a bottle of wine on a Monday we will end up regretfully pouring more than half of it out the next Monday because its gone bad. We were married in June and by July I had pretty much given up all alcohol completely, well except for that 4th of July where things got a little out of hand but pretty much after that I was done, and by out of hand I mean I had two margaritas and talked with a little bit of a lisp for a few hours.

Since getting pregnant I have had a severe craving for anything alcohol related. I know, I know you can drink a little wine if you want to but personally I just don’t want to even start this whole “sip of wine here and there thing”. Again, being Type A and a Virgo, if this is something I can control then I will avoid it. Not to say I don’t miss it desperately though. I find myself longing for beers at NBA games, I have asked a few friends to just sniff their cocktails in the hopes that just the smell will get me by for the next few long months.

Last Friday I was craving a margarita, so I scoured the internet for the best non-alcoholic margs I could find. By the time my husband got home from work I had cuban music playing, chips and dip set out and two ice cold frozen fake margaritas ready and waiting. It took him a minute to catch up to the fact that we were having cocktail hour at 7pm in our PJ’s but he’s learned over the last few months that as long as I am happy to go for it and dove right in. Below is said Margarita.

To make these at home, they are super super simple, here’s what you will need:

  • Lime wedge
  • coarse sugar
  • 1 (6-oz) can frozen limeade concentrate (I used just limeade concentrate and added more ice)
  • ¾ cup orange juice
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • 4 cups ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Rub the edge of margarita glasses with the lime wedge. Dip rims in the coarse sugar. ( I used rose sugar because I was feeling extra spry)
  2. In a blender, combine the limeade concentrate, orange juice, unsweetened grapefruit juice and ice cubes. Blend until slushy. Serve in the margarita glasses.

DONE! Takes like 3 minutes and tastes fantastic. I think the grapefruit juice almost makes it taste like bitter tequila and the entire thing definitely quelled my margarita craving for now.  Let me know what you think if you try it!
